STATEMENT OF WORK
Design-bid-build, pre-construction, value engineering, sustainable strategic planning and construction
This three-phase project involves the complete replacement of the secondary school with the existing school remaining in operation during construction. The capacity of the new 140,000-square-foot school is 1,400 students and approximately 110 teachers and staff.
The school will have 31 general instruction classrooms, nine science classrooms, learning spaces for special needs, library, administration offices, multi-purpose room, lunch servery, tech education shops, black-box theatre, weight room, and a gymnasium with change and storage rooms.
The three-storey atrium serves as the heart of the school with two central corridors branching out from either
side of this space. The theatre, administration offices, lunch servery, and learning commons open directly
onto the atrium, and corridors on the second and third floors terminate with an overlook down into the atrium. The school is designed with green building design and construction elements.
Phase one of the project involves the construction of the new Handsworth Secondary School, which is eight months ahead of schedule and will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2021 allowing ample time for the North Vancouver School District to move in and prepare for classes commencing in September 2022.
Upon completion of construction, Ventana will commence abatement and demolition of the existing school on Edgewood Road in phase two. The school’s demolition is scheduled to take place from September 2022 to March 2023. The third phase consists of theinstallation of a new playfield to the south of the new school and ravine restoration works that are scheduled to take place from April 2023 to July 2023.
