The $130,450,000 Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PoCo Rec Centre) is a 375,800-square-foot complex that has the Terry Fox Library, Wilson Lounge, three arenas, aquatic centre, commercial kitchen, fitness centre, gymnasium, change rooms, community and outdoor space, 425-stall below grade parkade, and a complex mechanical system.
As a fast-track, design-build project, PoCo Rec Centre presented several challenges that Ventana worked with the City of Port Coquitlam (City) to overcome. The largest challenge was to keep the library and two sheets of ice operational while the project was built in phases. One key challenge was to meet the City’s affordability criteria without compromising the project.
Phase 1 involved the construction of a 205,000-square-foot building with the Terry Fox Library, Wilson Lounge, aquatic centre, two arenas, fitness centre, change rooms, administrative offices, commercial kitchen, and multipurpose space.
In July 2019, Phase 1AB was completed and the library and ice operations were relocated into the new building and demolition of the existing building commenced. Phase 1C with the leisure pool and fitness centre was completed in January 2020.
Phase 2 has a third sheet of ice, community and outdoor space, a gym, lounge, and parkade. Phase 2 was completed five months ahead of schedule in June 2021.
Deliverables for the project include the development permit application, design-build responsibility for earth works on the site, excavation, shoring, erection of the structure, building envelope, and architectural, mechanical and electrical trades.
